I thought this novel was bold and audacious, and I have seen a lot of negative reviews on this for taking on the life of a real person, but I think that's what the historical fiction genre dares to do. This book does not claim to be fact, despite what some disgruntled readers might say. There is a clear disclaimer that it is fictional, and when Oates apparently said that she felt Norma Jeane "guiding her hand," I think she simply meant that she became so obsessed with the project that she felt she was inside of Norma Jeane instead of Norma Jeane being a separate character from herself.

As for the writing style, which some reviewers have called "sloppy," those portions are called stream of consciousness, and it's a very effective technique for this story. At times, Norma Jeane's thoughts are disjointed, whether it's from the state of her mental health or from drug/alcohol use, and the stream of consciousness style really creates that disjointed effect really well. As for the "bad poetry," to a certain extent, it should be bad because Norma Jeane wasn't a world-renowned poet, and it was Norma Jeane, the character, writing those poems, not Oates. However, I would disagree that all of it is bad. While much of it is fragmented, there are some poignant lines/images that stuck with me.

I think with historical fiction, there will always be the question of authorial license, libel, etc., but I don't think that what Oates has done here is anything she should be reprimanded for. I think she has done her research on a person and then went deeper and deeper inside to create a fictional character, an imagined inside life of someone so vastly famous that we forget she is a person. And I think that's important.

Definitely triggered some post-traumatic stress for me. Didn't expect that. But it is a very readable imagining of Marilyn Monroe's life. In my opinion, the author did a fantastic job capturing the ironic inconsistencies in her life -- dependence on men and power in Hollywood; a smart women who most assumed was dumb; a sexually empowered woman who longed for a daddy figure.

Not for the squeamish or those who don't want to read about sex... lots of unsavory behavior. But artfully written and truly a work of incredible literature.
I have read many books about Marilyn. This author obviously has not. This is a terrible fictional account of Marilyn's life. So much is made up that it's hard to find any truth. The fact that the author keeps referring to Cass Chaplin as a Gemini when he was born in May 5 proves she did little research and has no problem weaving a story far from fact. I forced myself to read 45% of this book, hoping it would shed new light on Marilyn's life. It is a disgusting and disgraceful glimpse at a fictional character who slightly resembles Marilyn Monroe. Shame on this author for degrading the memory of a woman used and mistreated her entire short life. There are only two positives here I bought the book on sale and it reminded me of some of my favorite movies. I'm deleting this book from my kindle library and going to watch a Marilyn film.

Intriguing novel of America's iconic beautiful blonde sex goddess. Her beauty and mystique unsurpassed to this very day. Oates writes with artistic genius depicting Hollywood's depravity and exploitation of people lured by the glamour and wealth of the film industry. Monroe's mentally ill mother worked in the studios of the film industry and instilled in her daughter a fascination for Hollywood and actors. The novel describes Marilyn's hard and sad life in foster homes, orphanages and later climb to fame in Hollywood. A fascinating examination through Oates creative artistry using a wondrous palette of words and similes like only she can devise to describe with trenchant insight Marilyn's tortured psyche perhaps already predisposed by genetic susceptibility and the aberrant nurturing and abuse of a mentally disturbed mother and ultimately exploited sexually and financially by the movie industry & even the president of the nation. A marvelous biographical novel. Fact and fiction beautifully woven by one of our best writers.
