ANYONE who treasures graphic art and excellent storytelling will LOVE this book! The artwork is rich in detail and painstakingly beautiful. I recognized buildings from my own visits to New Orleans and every character, every creature, every building, every wall --every leaf is done in detail as if it were the only figure in the frame. Street scenes stand out so perfectly that I spent more time than I can ever remember LOOKING at each frame, and loving each.

The story is fun, too! Man feels haunted, followed, takes bus, gets mugged, meets cats -- (It didn't hurt that the lead one-eyed cat is the spitting image of my own Spooky) -- gets taken home by gorgeous girl, goes to cemetery .... And there the plot thickens!!!!!!!! Wanna-be vampires and real zombies later, he is left with the girl and his own personal fay problem, but with her help and magic you feel like he may be able to hold his own. Although I know the kind of love and detail that went into this graphic novel must have taken years, I can't help but want the adventure to continue. Please give us more, Michael L. Peters!

Crescent City Magick Welcome To New Orleans Michael L Peters 9781490488783 Books Reviews

Crescent City Magick has a lot going for it Colorful characters, intriguing situations, and some fantastic artwork. As a stand-alone book, it's a little thin, raising lots of questions but not answering very many. But it's clearly meant to be the first chapter of a longer tale, and it definitely left me eager to see more.

Clayton Woods is in sad shape when we meet him Out of work, depressed, haunted by some unspecified childhood trauma, and apparently being stalked by mysterious figures (or is he just paranoid?). He winds up in New Orleans, where he meets Julia, a spirited young lady with a talent for witchcraft. Julia believes, against all appearances, that Clayton is destined for greatness, and together they start exploring the mysteries and dangers lurking in the shadows of the Crescent City.

You can see where this relationship is going Clayton is morose and uptight, Julia is the optimistic free spirit who's going to "save" him from himself. But Julia, with her southern drawl and blunt sense of humor, is a charmer nonetheless. And reading between the lines, her agenda may not be entirely selfless. There's lots of room for exploration and growth for both characters, and I'm interested in seeing where the story goes.

The real selling point here is the artwork. Michael Peters dedicates the book to classic comic book illustrators like Barry Windsor-Smith and Mike Kaluta, and that association isn't just wishful thinking on his part. The pages are filled to the brim with beautiful, evocative details, and even the most mundane street scene is a visual feast. Peters has clearly poured his heart and soul into this book, and it's well worth your attention.
To start with, if you like the work of Neil Gaiman, the contemporary folk magic tales written and collected by Terri Windling, or the works of Catherynne Valente, Charles de Lint and others in this vein then you might like this. The art is inspired by Barry Windsor Smith (Conan the Barbarian, Wolverine Weapon X, Storyteller, etc...) and Bernie Wrightson (Swamp Thing, Frankenstein, Batman Cult and others). That's a great start in itself.
This adventure introduces us to a haunted young man who can't stay put for very long. His problems have a way of catching up with him so he keeps on the move in the hope of finding the answers to those issues haunting him. He finds himself in New Orleans where the day to day troubles are a bit more daunting than the one's he's trying to escape. The touches of reality here are well done, easy to relate to. Then he discovers his new life in New Orleans has a different level of weird than he would have expected, and it starts with his meeting a cute witch name Julia and also her overprotective friend, Bev. That's all I'm giving away.
As individual, self published efforts go this one hits a lot of high notes. The love Michael Peters has for spinning the tale is obvious. It certainly deserves more attention and I hope a bigger publisher sees this book and approaches him with a more lucrative offer than self publishing is likely to provide.
Don't wait for that to happen. It's an inexpensive book and it's better than good. It's not the kind of book I expected, because too often these self published efforts are fine but not great. This is a consistently solid effort that loses no momentum, the story is compelling, the characters are sympathetic and likable and it's all wonderfully drawn. This book has heart and skill that belies any minor quibbles I might have.
I hope he gets a publishing deal soon because I want to see more of what unfolds in Crescent City Majick. Self publishing is expensive and hard so I hope he garners a lot more attention to this rare gem.
