What if you killed yourself and discovered that the "Afterlife" might actually suck? Pogue Eldridge is a woman who does just that, and she starts to realize that this Afterlife stuff isn't at all what she expected. First, she's required to stay on a specific floor at the Sterling Hotel until renovations in Hell and Heaven are completed. That's the rules. Second, she can't go up to the nice floors where all the rich people are. More rules. And third, the food isn't that great, and there's nothing to do. Death imitating life? Pogue thinks so, and along with 15-year-old Katina, who died of a drug overdose (another form of suicide), they decide to go exploring, and bring along some of the others they've met. But because of the rules, they can only go down in the hotel elevator. And once they're in Hell, they can't leave unless "Lucy" decides they can. Join Pogue and her companions on a seriously twisted, often funny, and macabre trip through the Afterlife, where a Goth Lucifer suffers from depression, Jesus plays video games and smokes way too much pot, and Hell truly is a crappy place to be.

"Ranalli is one of those rare authors who can seamlessly combine horror with the hilariously bizarre, all with a sly little smile and wink. With Ranalli's unique turns of phrase and descriptions, Suicide Girls in the Afterlife pokes fun at life, death, and the absurdity of being human. A strange, entertaining, and thought-provoking read." (Andi Marquette, author of several novels including Friends in High Places and the award-winning Land of Entrapment

"Suicide Girls in the Afterlife is weird and fun and hauntingly bittersweet. I read it in one evening and enjoyed it very much." (Brian Keene, author of "The Rising" and "The Conqueror Worms.")

Suicide Girls in the Afterlife edition by Gina Ranalli Literature Fiction eBooks

Whimsical. Reminded me a little of the earlier books in the Incarnations of Immortality series, sort of that 'mythological meets modern-day' juxtaposition. I did find it sort-of odd that the afterlife here was based on a Christian-style form of judgement on a good / evil scale, but hell didn't seem that torturous and heaven didn't seem that idyllic. Both just seemed like the philosophical extension of 'the rich get richer', with the tedium and repetition of day-to-day life filling in for overt suffering. It was a fair story, though without really well fleshed-out characters, but a pretty clever twist ending added up to something enjoyable, if not terribly memorable. Call it 3.5 / 5 stars.

Suicide Girls in the Afterlife edition by Gina Ranalli Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Suicide Girls in the Afterlife by Gina Ranalli certainly features a very bizarre version of the afterlife. A young woman named Pogue commits suicide, and goes to a hotel, because heaven and hell are being renovated. The afterlife isn't a particularly fair place, because it turns out that just about everyone counts as a suicide, other than the rich--who can afford the best healthcare, and to exercise and eat healthily.

Pogue joins up with a recently deceased junkie and decides to explore the hotel to find out why the afterlife sucks so bad. Along the way, she meets up with a lot of weird people, including Lucifer and Jesus.

There's a good bit of humor. The characters are interesting. Really, I just enjoyed the heck out of this story. I feel obliged to point out, though, that that this story is very inexpensive in ebook form (99¢ as of this review), it is also contained in The Bizarro Starter Kit (Orange), which is a really great value and contains a lot of other cool stories.
No one knows what waits for us in the hereafter. I can only hope it's something like the Sterling Hotel in Gina Ranalli's "Suicide Girls in the Afterlife".

In this novella we are introduced to Pogue, a young lady who may or may not want to end her life. Regardless, her death is labeled a suicide and she is forced to await final judgment in a modest hotel room while heaven and hell undergo renovation and expansion. Not content to sit she decides to go exploring, grabbing her new friend and fellow suicide Katina. What follows is a Divine Comedy, if Dante had a modern sense of humor.

Overall this short piece is fast paced and runs the emotional gamut. At times hilarious, others disturbing, Ranalli packs a serious punch with her prose. Her inventive take on religious icons also bears mentioning, the way she gently sculpts Christ and the Devil in the Greek mold of fallible divinity while adding a contemporary flair to them.

It is unfortunate that this edition is no longer in print, but can be found in the "Bizarro Starter Kit (Orange)" and digitally for . Gina Ranalli has crafted a fun, fast, and witty vision of life after death.

*UPDATE The author kindly informed me that "Suicide Girls" is still very much available for purchase in print. Apologies for the mix-up.
The story revolves around a character named Pogue Eldridge(though in a possible typo her name changes to Eldritch later in the kindle version) who is a recent suicide... victim? Anyway, she arrives in the afterlife, at least kind of. She's slightly disappointed when she arrives at what she thinks is heaven and finds it's just a great big hotel, but things aren't as they seem.

She and her companions, all "suicides" on some level (except for a half-alien and some famous religious figures), decide to go exploring and they meet many people and disturbing sights as they adventure through the different levels of the hotel. The premise is good and very well done! The story is well-written, and the plot is executed in a compelling way, but there were some weaknesses.

There's one particularly graphic scene that came out of nowhere when they were exploring the "hell" levels of the hotel. It was shocking, and not necessarily in a good way. In another book, a similar scene might have worked better, but in this one it was almost as if the author just needed something graphic and shocking so it could really feel like a traditional "Bizarro" piece. I don't think it needed that flourish. I think it was awkward and tasteless. If you're wondering what it is, it involves a naked dude and a decapitated baby's head. Yep. Have fun with that image. You're welcome.

But don't let you put that off the book. That scene is over fast, and the rest of the book will hold your attention in a good way. I think I noticed a few plot holes here and there, but it could be just me overthinking things. I also felt like the portrayal of Jesus was a bit cliche these days, but it worked with the story.

If it sounds like I didn't like the book, that's not the case. I liked it. Loved it even. I'm a big fan of the genre and I'm thinking this is one I will probably end up reading again! This is a good intro to Bizarro because the story is creative and surreal and it possesses a strong plot and certain characterizations and themes that will at once be familiar but still new to new readers of Bizarro.

I'm giving it 4/5 stars just because of the few qualms I listed above, but it's a strong rating nonetheless and I hope you buy it. At 99 cents on kindle/ebook format you cannot go wrong at all, and it is worth that and more!
The first of hers I ever read, and it hooked me from the start. I could "see" the forest in the opening scene... it's always so much fun when you find an author who describes their world well enough that they can pull you into it, and she had me right from the start. Not easy to do in a world this different! If you haven't read her yet, grab this one. If you have, don't miss this one.
